Ever Been Suicidal?

I have a family member who is single and he keeps asking what is the point of life if you can't share it with anyone? and I don't know what to tell him but keep trying, life is a challenge bla bla bla but is it true? is it worth the pain?

I mean we all die in the end so why prolong the pain? it would be selfish from me just to want him to stay alive for my own benefit..

So has anyone else ever felt this way and got any advice that might help!?
